Altered sperm FISH. Is embryo Pre-implantation Genetic Diagnosis (PGD) advisable? IB Research.
It is widely accepted amongst experts in the field of assisted reproduction and gynaecology that the most common cause of pregnancy loss is connected to genetic abnormalities in the embryo which render normal development impossible.
At IB Biotech, we set out to determine if males with altered sperm FISH had a greater probability of generating chromosomally abnormal embryos and, therefore, a lower chance of successful pregnancy.
For the purpose of the study, an analysis was carried out of data obtained from embryos in couples who underwent pre-implantation genetic diagnosis (PGD) with the aim of improving their chances of a successful pregnancy. The results of embryos from males with altered sperm FISH were later compared with those from normal sperm FISH.
The conclusion was reached that males with altered sperm FISH had a greater chance of generating chromosomally abnormal embryos. It was also concluded that males with poor quality semen had a greater chance of having altered sperm FISH.
Therefore, these couples would benefit from embryo PGD with the aim of improving their chances of a full term pregnancy.
