At a medical event in Italy, Instituto Bernabeu addresses the strict processes that it adheres to for egg and sperm donation

  • 29-01-2020

Instituto Bernabeu has participated in a professional event for general health and reproductive medicine specialists. The clinic addressed the procedures it adheres to for egg and sperm donation, in addition to means of achieving improved results. The congress was entitled ‘Means of diagnostic and therapeutic healthcare in assisted reproduction procedures and synergies between specialists in the field.’ Instituto Bernabeu addressed the requirements for and access to heterologous artificial insemination through egg donation, sperm donation and embryo adoption.

Assisted reproduction treatment using donated ova and sperm has been performed in Italy since 2014 following a Constitutional Court declaration indicating that prohibiting this type of insemination with donated gametes was illegitimate. The event aimed to bring a wide range of experts into contact with standard practice in the field. It also benefited from Instituto Bernabeu’s extensive experience in donation of this kind. Its process exceeds the requirements that are strictly required by law and includes psychological, genetic and medical test performed at the clinic during the donor selection process.

Instituto Bernabeu candidates undergo strict psychological, genetic and medical check-ups and only candidates with an ideal profile are selected to be part of the donation programme. According to data from the first quarter of 2019, only 22% of candidates passed all the phases and became donors. This figure is even lower in men: only 9% of them were accepted when the exclusion criteria were applied.
