The importance of accurate 3D and 4D ultrasound scans

  • 03-12-2010
It is often mistakenly considered that 3D and 4D ultrasound scans only serve to see the face of the baby prior to birth. This has even led to the opening of foetal photo studios. But the biggest advantage that the 4D scan gives us is that it helps us monitor the correct organic growth of the foetus at each stage of the gestational process.

An ultrasound scan should be completed by a gynaecologist who is specialised in sonography to be able to visualise and study in detail the data offered by the ultrasound scan and measure the growth of all the foetal internal organs. In the majority of cases if the scan is done by a specialist then more invasive techniques such as amniocentesis can be avoided and, of course, brings peace of mind to all future parents as to the proper growth of their child.

Instituto Bernabeu was one of the first centres in Spain to have a prenatal diagnostic unit with high-resolution ultrasound scanning. This unit is headed by Dr Francis Sellers, one of the few sonographers who has achieved SEGO level 4 (the highest diagnostic accolade).
