Instituto Bernabeu presents research into the role of cytokines in implantation failure at the ESHRE Campus in Milan

Instituto Bernabeu participated in a gathering of experts at the ‘Endometriosis and infertility: the extent of the problem’ ESHRE Campus held in Milan on 23^rd and 24^th January 2020. The scientific event, organised by the European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology’s endometriosis and endometrial disorders work group, selected research work carried out by Instituto Bernabeu as a candidate for the best poster award. Dr Belén Moliner, the clinic's expert in endometriosis, attended the meeting in order to answer questions about the research work: ‘The inflammatory cytokine profile in peripheral blood of women with recurrent implantation failure with endometriosis and without it.’

The research compared the profile of cytokines in patients who suffer from recurrent implantation failure (RIF) and differed between women who have and do not have endometriosis. Cytokines are molecules that mediate immune system responses and have some consequences, such as inflammation. As such, they can be early detectors of endometriosis.

Dr Moliner explains that “we have observed that the inflammation profile in patients with endometriosis is different and this suggests that the reason for recurrent implantation failure in these patients could also be different.”
