The Instituto Bernabeu correlates embryo quality with the appearance of mosaicism

  • 26-07-2017

The research is presented together with ten studies by the reproductive medicine clinic at the annual meeting of ESHRE held in Switzerland from 2 to 5 July.

A study by the Instituto Bernabeu has found a correlation between embryo quality and a greater probability of the appearance of mosaicism, the presence of normal cells together with other abnormal cells. For some time, the Instituto Bernabeu has followed different lines of research related to embryo mosaicism and its detection, since these embryos may have lower implantation rates and a greater risk of aneuploidy, a chromosomal abnormality that may lead to genetic disorders.

The committee of experts of the European meeting on reproductive medicine of the European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology, held in the Swiss city of Geneva from 2 to 5 July, has selected for presentation the study by the Instituto Bernabeu: “The quality of the inner cell mass and trophectoderm is correlated with mosaicism”. The research is led by the biologist Laura Martín, together with the doctors Jorge Ten, María del Carmen Díaz, Dori Rodríguez, Jaime Guerrero, Laura Cascales, Belén Lledó, the medical co-director, Ll. Aparicio and the medical director of the Instituto Bernabeu, Rafael Bernabeu. The experts investigated the correlation between the quality of the inner cell mass and of the trophectoderm (cellular tissue that will form the placenta) when performing embryo biopsy and the presence of mosaic embryos.

The Instituto Bernabeu has determined that when all the chromosomes of the embryo are studied with comprehensive chromosomal screening (CCS) the results show that the percentage of the appearance of mosaicism increases in line with the reduction in quality of the embryo. The researchers conclude that the quality of the inner cell mass and of the trophectoderm are markers of the existence of mosaicism in the embryo.
